• I learned about flying from that
Rich Olsen-Flying to DC, refueled at night on grass area with a slant and departed next day. Did normal fuel check before take off. Noticed fuel gauge was low and landed at Southbridge. One tank was dry, the second had 4 gallons. Learned that you should always heed any warnings of low fuel; Doug Stone – Flying through Franconia Notch-forgot to check restrictions of an MOA. Landed in Concord. Difficult to find phone number to contact controlling agency. Noted to also be careful flying to Fitchburg-near the restricted area at Devens – Boston approach has info. Area is cold = okay to fly – Hot = active; Butch Crook- Flying in Robinson 44 to Fitchburg. Looked down for a few seconds to view a construction area only to look up and find 2 trikes at the same altitude. They did not show up on radar. Also spoke about the difficulty to reach Pease tower for jump approval.

Program: Review of “A Day at Marlboro Airport”
Raffles: People would have liked to win a helicopter or biplane ride that day, rather than having to return later; Some people said they would be afraid to ride in a light plane, so the grand prize wasn’t too appealing to them; Suggestion of lowering price to $2 each or 3 for $5 was a good one; Kids’ raffle – attendees would have preferred to be able to buy stuff rather than entering a raffle. Cheap, low-priced stuff could have sold briskly. Toys, balsa gliders, etc. Mini windsocks were very popular; Silent Auction -- Not much participation. But then, not many pilots there. Additional reminder announcements might have helped. Concessions/Food/Water: Needed plenty of water for volunteers. Thanks again to Sandy!Sold out of water. Sodas not so much, especially the Coke, surprisingly; Displays: Dudley’s chart and photos were a big hit; Chapter table could have used something more to draw attention, such as the poster Dudley suggested listing all the uses of general aviation; More than 50 people signed up for a free newsletter. Hopefully some will be interested enough to attend an event, maybe even join the chapter; Learn to Fly only needed one instructor at a time; they could have split the shifts; Airplanes: Richard had minor “damage” due to all the kids in his cockpit. General agreement that it’s tough to keep kids from fiddling with things once they’re in the plane. Also that there must be a person supervising (as we did); Overall, a safe event with plenty of people keeping watch. It helped that most planes were roped off! Activities: All were very successful. Butch Crook’s parachute jump was a real highlight. Deb did a great job piloting; Overall Logistics: Announcements were tough to hear down the flightline due to crowd noise plus helicopter/plane activity; Parking was the biggest issue we faced. CAP needed someone with more experience guiding cars at Trombetta’s so that people wouldn’t get boxed in as some were; Police detail was a great help. All of the DPW contributions were really important and useful for safety;
