Meeting was called to order by President Beverly Lieberman at 7:04 pm with 11 members in attendance.
Secretary minutes – Approved as published in the newsletter
Treasurer’s report – Published in newsletter: current balance is $2317.14. All checks for dues have been deposited. Report approved.
Upcoming speakers – In August, Deb Cahill will tell us about flying the Air Race Classic.
Membership report – One new member: Greg Berghorn, a DFS flight student
Young Eagles report – Many people have been called but none responded, so no Young Eagles this Saturday despite the good weather forecast. Some kids are returning for multiple Young Eagles flights. General consensus that it’s okay to fly a kid again if they bring a new friend, but otherwise once a year max. This program is not meant to provide free rides to the same kids every month.
Newsletter report – Christine is seeking text and photos from Lock Haven and Oshkosh. Ken Sherman article will appear in September, Dudley Darling in November. No one scheduled for January yet due to upcoming elections. Current board member Bob Cooper hasn’t provided one yet and may take January. Chapter is interested to hear more about his new role at MAC.
Guests: New member Greg Berghorn from Framingham, a Raytheon engineer. Greg has been interested in aviation all his life and finally decided to “dive in.” He’s just started lessons and has 4 hours in his logbook.
Mail-in information The effort to repeal the state sales tax exemption for aviation-related purchases was defeated. Such purchases will remain sales-tax-free for another year. Letters and phone calls ARE noticed and can have an effect. News from around 9B1.
On Sunday, July 6, Ken Sherman soloed his student Ed Paulsen.
New equipment on the field thanks to a unique opportunity for MAC funding: a 2008 Ford F-350 pickup with snowplow, and a tractor with attachments for 14-foot mower, 6-foot snowblower and 6-foot snowplow. Bob Stetson is very pleased to have equipment he doesn’t have to fix to use. Of the total $170k cost, $150k came from the state. Graphics for the truck were donated by MHQ.
I learned about flying from that Richard Dupée thinks a slight right-hand turn when departing 32 helps avoid noise abatement zone. Also keeps centerline tracking in your mind. Bob Stetson countered that the AIM calls for extended centerline tracking until 400 feet AGL. A heading change of 5 degrees isn’t a turn if that’s what is required to maintain a ground track along the centerline.
Rich Olsen had alternator noise in his headset. During replacement, a bad diode was found in the old one. He hadn’t noticed the slower charging. Don’t ignore noise – it could be an important indication of a problem.
Deb Cahill flew the Glasair Sportsman 2+2 yesterday. Bart Bartelsman got 2 hours in the Legend Cub.
Old business Replacement windows for the trailer are on hold indefinitely.
Yard Sale generated $311 profit but required more than 80 hours of work by Paula Skog and Shirlee Purcell, plus more time on the 21st from other volunteers. Also costs the chapter to throw away unsold items. Paula and Shirlee won’t run it again. The Board has discussed other moneymaking options. One suggestion: eBay, which Paula declined to coordinate. Ken Sherman will do instead. Many thanks to Paula and Shirlee for their years of effort, and the other volunteers who’ve worked behind the scenes at each event.
New business Should we hold Air Day? The suggestion has been made to invite “those who have touched the airport,” e.g. regular donors to holiday raffle, etc. Air Day used to be a family day; the pilots had young, growing families. Those families have grown up. Also, antique planes aren’t pulled out of the hangars like before, so Air Day has become like any other cookout. It could morph into a community relations event, but that will require plenty of planning (including security/access) and organization. For now, on hold.
Officers’ and Board Members’ terms expire this year. Christine Pulliam and Dudley Darling expressed interest in running for the positions of President and Vice President, respectively. Anyone interested in running for any of the other positions should let Beverly know.
Christine suggested that the chapter take on a trailer improvement project: replacing/reinforcing deck boards where needed, and repainting the trailer. It is the public face of our chapter and should reflect the pride we take in our organization and our planes. Concerns were raised regarding the cost of materials, time required (person-hours), and durability of new paint. Christine’s initial research found a reasonable monetary cost. At Bob Stetson’s recommendation, she will check with Bob Genna at Town Line Hardware for a second cost estimate. She will also send an e-mail to chapter members to see if they are willing to donate time, money or supplies to this project. Additional discussion tabled until next meeting, when more information (and hopefully more members) will be available.
50/50 Raffle: Beverly Lieberman won; $5 to her and $6 to the chapter.
Meeting adjourned.
